Summer Begins in Paphos
Paphos is preparing for another busy and exciting summer season, with major cultural celebrations, entertainment events, sporting activities, and continued growth across tourism and property sectors.
Kataklysmos Festival Returns to Paphos Harbour
One of Cyprus’ most anticipated annual traditions, the Kataklysmos (Flood Festival), is taking place at Kato Paphos Harbour through June 1st. The festival officially marks the beginning of summer and includes traditional music and dancing, family activities, waterfront celebrations, food stalls, and evening entertainment along the harbour promenade.
Easier International Access to Cyprus
Travel to Cyprus continues to improve ahead of the summer season, with new direct flights between Cyprus and Kazakhstan launching in early June. Expanded international connections continue to support tourism, overseas property interest, and easier access to the island for international visitors and residents.
Cyprus Remains Safe and Welcoming
Despite international headlines earlier this spring regarding tensions in the wider Middle East region, Cyprus continues to operate normally with uninterrupted airport arrivals, active tourism, and a strong summer outlook. Local authorities continue to emphasise that Cyprus remains one of the Mediterranean’s safest and most stable destinations for visitors, retirees, and permanent residents.
Property Market & Economic Update
Strong International Demand for Paphos Property
The Paphos property market continues to attract strong international interest in 2026, particularly from non-EU buyers seeking lifestyle relocation opportunities, retirement homes, and long-term investments.
Paphos has become Cyprus’ most internationally active property market, with growing demand from buyers across the Middle East and Asia attracted by the island’s safety, climate, lifestyle, and European Union residency opportunities.
New Coastal Developments Reshaping Paphos
Several large-scale luxury developments along the coastline continue to transform the area, adding modern residential communities, upgraded infrastructure, and new lifestyle amenities to the city.
Rental & Investment Trends
Long-term rental yields across Paphos remain steady, while short-term holiday rentals continue to perform strongly in popular coastal areas.
Mortgage interest rates in Cyprus have also stabilised, helping maintain healthy buyer confidence and market activity throughout 2026.
Tourism & Economy Outlook
While tourism figures softened slightly earlier this spring due to temporary regional security concerns and cautious travel advisories issued in some European countries, Cyprus’ tourism industry continues to show resilience.
The island welcomed record visitor numbers in 2025, and the broader economy is still forecast to grow steadily in 2026, supported by sectors including shipping, technology, and international business services.
Industry professionals remain optimistic that tourism activity will strengthen further as the summer season progresses.
Cyprus Tax & Banking Updates for 2026
Cyprus has introduced several important tax and compliance updates affecting residents, property owners, and business operators.
Annual Tax Returns Now Required
All Cyprus tax residents aged between 25 and 70 are now required to submit an annual tax return regardless of income level — even if earnings fall below the tax-free threshold or are zero.
At the same time, the personal tax-free allowance has increased from €19,500 to €22,000.
Corporate Tax Adjustment
The corporate tax rate has increased from 12.5% to 15% in line with international OECD tax standards.
Why Banks Are Updating Customer Information
Banks across Cyprus are currently updating customer records to comply with international transparency and reporting regulations.
Clients may now be asked to:
- Confirm their Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- Update proof of residency details
- Complete biometric or selfie verification through banking apps
These procedures are standard compliance measures and are not linked to investigations or audits.
Applying for a Cyprus Tax Number
Residents who do not yet have a Cyprus Tax Identification Number can now register online through the Tax For All (TFA) portal.
Applications generally require:
- Passport or ID
- Proof of residency
- Proof of address
Processing usually takes between one and two weeks.
Important VAT Changes for Property Buyers
Buyers planning to purchase a primary residence should note that the transitional provisions for the previous reduced 5% VAT scheme expire on June 15th, 2026.
Under the updated EU-aligned rules, the reduced VAT rate will apply only to the first 130 sqm of qualifying properties up to €350,000.
Cyprus continues to offer several attractive tax advantages for residents and investors, including:
- No annual immovable property tax
- No Special Defence Contribution on rental income
- Increased capital gains tax exemptions on primary residences
Cyprus Political Update
Cyprus held parliamentary elections in May, bringing several new political movements into parliament alongside shifts among some of the island’s established parties.
Analysts expect a more diverse political landscape moving forward, with increased attention on cost of living, economic policy, and transparency.
For residents, expats, and overseas investors, Cyprus continues to maintain political stability, strong European Union ties, and a positive long-term outlook.

International Pharos Chamber Music Festival (May 29 – June 6)
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the internationally renowned Pharos Chamber Music Festival returns to Cyprus from May 29th to June 6th.
